Hazard Perception Test (HPT)

Frequently asked questions about the Hazard Perception Test (HPT).

About the test

Learner drivers must pass the HPT before taking the drive test to get their licence. The HPT checks how well you identify and respond to potential road hazards.

The test takes up to 45 minutes and shows 25 short driving videos of driving situations and assesses your reactions. See Hazard Perception Test.

The HPT must be passed before you can take your drive test. All learner drivers applying for a P1 licence (Red P plate – the first stage of driving on your own with extra safety rules) must pass the HPT.

Some overseas licence holders converting to a Victorian licence may also be required to complete the test.

See Hazard Perception Test.

If you have never held a driver licence, you must have a current Victorian learner permit and be at least 17 years and 11 months old.

Overseas licence holders who need to do the HPT must pass the Learner Permit test first. See Convert overseas licence to find out what the requirements are for converting a licence from your country.

The first time you do the online test is free – there is no cost.

If you need to do the test online again, you will be charged a test fee.

There is also a fee for the taking the test in-person, if you cannot do it online.

See Hazard Perception Test.

The requirements for converting your driver licence depend on what country you come from. See Convert overseas licence to find out what the requirements are for your country.

If you're taking the HPT online, you must complete the Learner Permit Test first. You can then make an appointment to visit a Customer Service Centre and have your overseas licence verified and identity confirmed before you can register.

If you take the test in person, your identity/licence verification can be completed at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
