Renewing your licence

The easiest way to renew your licence is online, using a myVicRoads account or the myVicRoads app

You can also renew by calling 1300 554 853 and paying over the phone. You may be able to pay via BPAY as well (the details will be on your renewal notice).

Yes. You can renew your licence up to 6 months after it expired.

If it has been longer than 6 months, additional steps will apply.  See Renew your licence.

You can renew your licence while you are interstate or overseas using your myVicRoads online account or the myVicRoads app. If a new photo is required, you can use a Photo Kit

Yes. Notices are sent by email or post 4–6 weeks before your licence expires. It is your responsibility to renew on time, even if you did not receive it.

If you don’t have your renewal notice, you can log into myVicRoads, click the  'Notifications' button and open ‘Notifications History’ to download it.

Plastic licence cards are usually mailed around 10 working days after you renew your licence and get your photo taken (if a new photo is needed).  

After you pay, your Digital Driver Licence will update within 1-2 days of payment. You can also use your receipt as a temporary licence.  See Renew your licence.

If you believe you have paid your licence renewal twice, keep both receipts and wait at least 48 hours before contacting us.

Licence photos

Generally, you will need a new licence photo if it has been more than 5 years since we last took one.  

Your licence renewal notice will tell you if a new photo is needed. If you don’t have your renewal notice, you can log into myVicRoads, click the 'Notifications' button and open 'Notifications History' to download it. 

If a new photo is required, you can pay your renewal online and then visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre or Photo Point location within 3 months to get your photo taken.

You don’t need an appointment to get your photo taken. Just visit VicRoads Customer Service Centre or Photo Point at a time that suits you.

You can pay your renewal online now, and then visit a  VicRoads Customer Service Centre or Photo Point location within 3 months to get your photo taken. 

You can only use a Photo Kit to provide a new photo if you are:

  • overseas
  • living in another state
  • medically unfit to drive, or
  • temporarily incarcerated.

Licence details, renewal periods and fees

Yes – most drivers can choose 3 or 10 years.

If you are 75 or older, only the 3 year renewal option is available. 

Before you renew your licence, you should always check your details in myVicRoads, and make sure everything is up to date.  

Remember, you must notify us within 14 days when your details change.
