How to easily renew your licence or adjust your renewal period online.

How to renew your licence

The easiest way to renew your licence is through your myVicRoads account online. You can renew before your licence expires or within 6 months after your expiry. This includes renewing when you’re interstate and overseas, even if you need a new photo.

Just follow these simple steps: 

  1. Download the app or log in to your myVicRoads account.
  2. Check your licence to see when it expires.
  3. Follow the steps to renew your licence.
  4. Once you've paid, you can either:
    • Download your digital driver licence on the MyVicRoads app. Allow up to 24 hours for your new licence to show.
    • Write your receipt number on your renewal notice. You can use this receipt as a temporary licence.
  5. We'll usually post your new card to the address we have on our records within 10 working days. 

You can also renew your licence in other ways, however these take longer than going online:

  • call 1300 554 853 and pay via the interactive menu (Visa or MasterCard* only)
  • via BPAY (using the details provided on your licence renewal notice). Payment by BPay is only available if a new licence photo is not required.

What happens when a new photo is required?

Your renewal notice will tell you when we need to take a new photo for your licence.

If a new photo is required, you have two options: 

A Photo Point is an Australia Post outlet, shire council or other outlet authorised to take licence photos and accept licence renewal payments on behalf of VicRoads. 

Not all Australia Post outlets or shire councils are Photo Points. Check our list of Photo Point locations (PDF) for your nearest location.

If you cannot visit us to get your photo taken within 3 months, you can fill out a Photo Kit form (PDF) if you are:

  • overseas
  • interstate
  • medically unfit to drive or
  • temporarily incarcerated.

Note that your licence may take longer to be processed and delivered.

As a driver licence is a Category A form of ID, we need to make sure all security protocols are followed.

If you are travelling overseas and plan to use your Victorian driver licence for a period, it’s important to make sure you can access your myVicRoads account. Setting up a passkey on your laptop or mobile device, before you leave, will allow you to log in without a text verification code to your Australian phone number.

If you have access to your myVicRoads account, you can renew your licence online. If a photo is needed, you can fill out a Photo Kit form (PDF) to provide us with a new photo.

If you don’t have a passkey set up and you can't access your myVicRoads account, then you will need to get in touch with us.  Our team will ask you a number of security questions to identify you. If you can't answer the security questions, you will have to visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre when you are next back in Australia.  

If your licence expires while you're overseas and you are not able to renew it, you have up to 5 years to renew it or have it reissued without having to take further tests. Just visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre with evidence of identity when you’re back in Victoria. 

If you're living overseas long term, you may need to get a licence in the country you’re living in. Check with the licensing authority of that country to find out what their requirements are.

 
  
How will I know when I need to renew?

We’ll send your renewal notice at least 4 to 6 weeks before your licence is due to expire. Depending on your notification preferences, it will come by email or post, to the address we have on file for you.

Remember it’s an offence to drive unlicensed. If you’re caught driving without a valid licence, penalties apply. So make sure you keep an eye out for your renewal notice.

It's your responsibility to renew your licence on time, even if you didn't receive the reminder notice.

Adjusting your renewal period

When renewing your licence, you can choose between paying for a 3-year renewal or a 10-year renewal. 

If you are over 75, only the 3-year renewal option is available. This shorter renewal period helps ensure your licence reflects your current health and fitness to drive.

The Victorian Government is helping to reduce financial barriers. This includes incentives for new drivers and rewards for safe driving habits when renewing their licence.

How do I renew my licence if it has expired?

If your licence has expired, been surrendered or cancelled for more than 6 months, but less than 5 years, it can be reissued by:

Note: you cannot appoint someone to act on your behalf to have your expired licence reissued – you must go to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre in person.

If your licence has expired more than five years, you’ll need to complete the following tests. The tests are defined by the licence you previously held:

* You may not need to complete all tests if you hold, or have held, a licence for another vehicle type within the last 5 years.
