Unregistered vehicle permits

You can't drive unregistered vehicles on the road unless you have a permit, or it’s exempt from registration.

You might need a UVP if:

• you’re preparing the vehicle for registration in Victoria
• you're moving a vehicle from place to place, on a one-off basis
• you're using a construction or a tracked vehicle.

The cost of a UVP depends on:

• the length of time you need it
• the type of vehicle
• the garaged address.

If you need a UVP for a single trip or you’re preparing a vehicle for registration, it’s easy to apply. Just follow these simple steps:

1. Make sure you’ve read all the information on Transport Victoria’s Unregistered vehicle permits page.
2. Decide which permit type you need and how long you need it.
3. Have your personal and vehicle information ready. This includes your VIN, Chassis or Engine number.
4. Fill out the online form. You’ll need to pay a fee when you apply.
5. Download the permit once your payment has been confirmed. We’ll also send a copy to your email.

For any other UVPs, you’ll need to call our contact centre or visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
