How to write off a vehicle
No more than 10 damage code combinations can be recorded in the system, so if you have more than 10 you’ll need to select the most essential ones.
When deciding which damage codes to provide, we recommend choosing:
- locations that align most with the new criteria (i.e. codes 8 and 14-41) rather than more general locations (1-7 and 9)
- heavy structural damage over all other codes
- structural damage (heavy or light) rather than panel damage.
Dismantlers should use the following codes:
General write-offs:
- Write-off type – Statutory
- Incident type – Dismantled
- Damage locations – 14
- Damage severity - H - Major stripping (interior parts, external panels)
Hoon vehicles only:
- Write-off type – Statutory
- Incident type – Dismantled
- Damage locations – 14
- Damage severity - E - Unrepairable (physical or economic)
A record can only be edited before it is submitted. This can be done from the Confirm details page using the following steps.
- Click ‘Edit’ beside Identify vehicle or Write-off details – the relevant page will display for editing.
- Make the necessary edits on the page. Some edits could change the data in the form, so you’ll need to complete the entire form.
- Click Next and continue through the form until you return to Confirm details.
- Click Submit – this will take you back to Step 1 and show a message confirming your changes.
The vehicle may be registered in a state other than Victoria. If you’re certain this vehicle is registered with the details you entered in Victoria, please call the myVicRoads support team.
If the displayed vehicle details don’t match those of the vehicle being written off, try searching using the VIN number.
Sometimes vehicle plates have been registered to a new vehicle in our system (this mostly happens with personalised plates), so the VIN number is the most accurate way to search.
If you’re still unable to process this vehicle, call the myVicRoads support team for help.
