Bell Street Bridge community feedback - August 2023

The Department of Transport and Planning created a survey for the community to provide feedback on how they use and experience the bridge since improvements were made in early 2022.

Who we heard from

The survey was targeted at people who walk or ride their bike on the Bell Street Bridge, however it was open to all road users. Approximately 79% of respondents said they were local residents.

Two in five people said they travel along, use or cross the Bell Street Bridge at least once on a daily basis, which suggests that users are familiar with the area and have had an opportunity to see the safety improvements.

Most people travel during the morning or evening peak times, typically on a mixture of weekdays and weekends.

Survey participation

How we engaged: A total of 557 people completed our twelve month post implementation review survey. The survey was open for two weeks, from 24 April – 5 May 2023.

What we heard

Changes made on Bell Street Bridge in early 2022 have been welcomed. However, they have not translated into improved perceptions of safety for the community.

Community feedback

  • Over half the people who responded feel that the current speed limit of 60km/h is inappropriate....
  • Pedestrians and bike riders believe the line markings on the road are not enough to improve safety.
  • Most people are aware of the signalised road crossings at Creek Pass Bridge or Harding Street Bridge, however they are unlikely to use them as they are perceived as too far away.

Potential improvements suggested by the community included:

  • Reducing the speed limit on Bell Street.
  • Widening footpaths on the bridge to create a greater distance from cars.
  • Installing physical barriers to separate pedestrians and bike riders from traffic.
  • Building a separate bridge or pathway for pedestrians and bike riders.

Thank you

The Department of Transport and Planning would like to thank the community for participating in the Bell Street Bridge survey.
