What are demerit points?
Demerit points are penalty points that are issued if you commit specific driving offences. These points are recorded against your driving record under the Road Safety Act 1986 (Vic) and Road Safety (Drivers) Regulations 2019 (Vic).
If you have no demerit points, that’s a good thing – it means that in the past 4 years, you haven't broken any driving rules that resulted in demerit points.
All drivers and riders start with zero (0) demerit points. The more offences you commit, the more demerit points you’ll get. Demerit points can lead to getting your licence suspended.
Demerit points apply from the date of the driving offence and remain active for 4 years. Active points can count toward your demerit point limit.

What is a driver history report
A driver history report provides a summary of information recorded against your driver licence or learner permit. It includes your licence status, issue dates, demerit points, licence conditions and any past suspensions.
You may need a driver history report for employment checks, insurance, court matters, verifying your driving experience, or when applying for an interstate or overseas licence.
Customers can order different types of reports depending on what they need.
These include:
- 5-year demerit point and driver history report – a summary of your licence status, demerit points, conditions, suspensions and other key information within the last 5 years.
- Complete demerit point and driver history report – a more detailed version, including full historical information held by VicRoads.
- Licence verification letter – confirms the status and type of licence(s) held.
- 5-year demerit points history report– shows your demerit point offences with the last 5 years.
