Change of gender

On this page you will find the documentation that you must provide to VicRoads to change your gender and title.

We've made important changes to the way you can update your personal details.

We’re still open for business but realise you may not want to visit a Customer Service Centre to update your personal details. If you need to renew or replace your licence or permit during this time and are concerned about having the same image (because your appearance has significantly changed) please continue to use your existing licence or permit until normal operations resume. After which, you will be able to visit a Customer Service Centre to update your photo at no cost.

VicRoads is required to record your gender and title. These details will be recorded but will not appear on your licence and/or learner permit card(s).

Documentation required to change your gender

You will need to visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre in person to present one of the following documents.

  • An 'Alteration of Sex in Birth or Recognised Details' certificate or equivalent from an Australian Births Deaths and Marriages registry.
  • A birth certificate or revised birth certificate that records the preferred gender from an Australian Births Deaths and Marriages registry.
  • A gender recognition certificate from an Australian Births Deaths and Marriages registry.
  • A State or Territory Gender Recognition Certificate.
  • A current or expired Australian passport that records your preferred gender (passports must not be expired by more than two years).
  • A letter from one of the following, certifying that you are/have been their patient and are/have been receiving appropriate clinical treatment for the gender transition. The treatment does not have to be specified:
    • a registered medical practitioner who is registered with the Medical Board of Australia or equivalent overseas authority
    • a registered psychologist who holds general registration status with the Psychology Board of Australia or equivalent overseas authority.
  • A letter from one of the following, certifying that you are/have been their client/patient and are of indeterminate, intersex or unspecified sex and live in the male, female, indeterminate, intersex or unspecified gender:
    • a registered medical practitioner who is registered with the Medical Board of Australia or equivalent overseas authority
    • a registered psychologist who holds general registration status with the Psychology Board of Australia or equivalent overseas authority

If you have changed your appearance, you will need a new photo taken at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre and you will be issued with a new learner permit and/or licence card.

You may also request VicRoads to change your title. Available titles include:

  • Mr
  • Ms
