Hire vehicle number plates

Hire vehicle plates used to be issued to people with written authority from Commercial Passenger Vehicles Victoria to allow a vehicle to be registered as a hire vehicle.

New hire vehicles aren’t issued with hire vehicle plates any more, but vehicles that have existing hire plates are allowed to keep them.

Changing hire vehicle number plates

Hire vehicle number plates can be transferred from one vehicle to another, as long as the TSC has authorised the transfer.

To transfer the plates, both vehicles need to be owned by the same person or company. There's no fee for a transfer.

Any previous number plates assigned to the vehicle need to be returned to your nearest VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

Changing to standard number plates

If you have hire vehicle plates, but would prefer standard number plates, visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. Return your hire plates and swap them with standard plates.

If you have standard number plates, you can't be issued with hire vehicle plates again.

Hire vehicle plate style

Hire vehicle plates have blue characters on a white background, and are issued in the following range:

  • Cars: VHA 000 to VHA 999, and VHB 000 to VHB 999
  • Motorcycles: VHC 000 to VHC 999, and S 000 to S 999.

Replacement hire vehicle plates can be ordered in the standard and slimline size.
