Trade apprentice registration discount

If you’re a trade apprentice using your car for work, find out how you can get 50% off your next registration renewal.

What's the discount for?

The trade apprentice discount can be used to get 50% off your next car registration fee (including the TAC charge).

Who can apply?

You can apply for the discount (or a refund of the discounted amount) if:

  • you’re an apprentice registered with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA)
  • you’re using your own car, ute or van for approved work purposes, or you regularly use it to get to or from work between 8.30pm and 5.30am. The vehicle cannot exceed 4.5 tonnes GVM.
  • you have a current Victorian driver licence
  • you've received your registration renewal notice.

Who can't apply?

You can’t apply for this discount if:

  • you're a learner driver
  • your licence is expired, cancelled or suspended
  • your vehicle is registered in someone else’s name
  • you have an apprenticeship discount already applied on another vehicle registered in your name
  • you’ve got vehicles with other concessions (except for hybrid and electric passenger vehicle concessions).

How do I apply?

You’ll need to provide:

  • your name, date of birth, email and phone number
  • your VRQA (External link) registration number
  • the registration number of the vehicle you use for work
  • your driver licence number.

How do I find the VRQA registration number?

Check any letters you’ve received from the VRQA (External link) to find your registration number or you can call your Apprentice Support Network Provider to find out.

What do I need from my employer?

We’ll check your details with your employer when you apply, so make sure your employer supports your application before you apply. They’ll need to verify that you’re using your vehicle for work purposes. If they can’t confirm this even if you’re approved, we’ll send you an invoice to pay the amount difference.

You’ll need to:

Once you’ve logged into your account:

  • Click on ‘Apprentice registration discount’ (at the bottom of the page).
  • Follow the steps to complete your application.

How long does it take to get approved?

Applications are processed within 7 business days. If you’re approved, the discount will be applied straight away when you pay your registration online.

What if my registration expires during this time?

If your registration is about to expire while your application is getting reviewed, you should pay the full registration amount so you can continue to use your vehicle on the road. We’ll refund the amount you’ve overpaid if you’re eligible.

How long will it take for me to get a refund?

If you’ve applied for a refund, we’ll process it within 7 business days. You’ll receive a cheque in the mail for the refunded amount if this gets approved. If you don't receive your cheque within 14 business days of your confirmation email, please call us on 13 11 71.
