Syrina Pi - Traffic Signal Lead

Meet Syrina Pi, a Signals Lead as part of our Signal Services team working on the optimisation of Melbourne’s traffic lights and training up new signals cadets, as part of the Smarter Roads program.

What’s your work background?

I graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and a Master of Engineering. I joined VicRoads in the 2009 graduate intake, and since then I have worked in various roles, including project development and project delivery, before joining the Signal Services team.

How did you come to join the Smarter Roads program and what was your interest in the program?

At the end of 2020, as part of the program, DoT recruited 14 new cadet traffic signal engineers. I was thrilled to become one of their Signals Leads. I am passionate in leading and supporting the development of new cadets who are going to contribute to create safe, efficient, and reliable journeys for all road users.

What are your impressions of the program?

The program allows us to improve the road network and our services for the road users. Traffic monitoring cameras provide us with real-time site condition information, which allows us to relieve congestion when there is an incident on the road network.

Other assets, such as wireless travel time sensors, variable message signs, and pedestrian sensors, provide great support for us in optimising the operation of traffic signals and to keep the road users informed.

You’re a Signals Lead. What does that involve?

My role requires me to lead and manage the development of a signal engineering team. This involves mentoring and coaching, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing culture, developing their skill and knowledge in traffic signal design and operation, and contributing to meet the traffic signal design and operation work demand in Signal Services.

How will the work you’re doing make it easier for people and freight to move around Melbourne’s roads?

By contributing to the design and operation of traffic signals, we are ensuring Victoria's traffic signal network is robust, integrated and future-ready. This supports us in creating a safe and simple connected journey for the all road users.
